Best Overall: Chewton Glen
Located on the edge of the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, England. This is a luxurious mansion which was originally built in the eighteenth century and is located about eight miles from Bournemouth Airport.
Aside from the ivy clad exteriors on the outside, the public spaces in this hotel also exude a classic grandeur. The interiors are equipped with all the latest facilities like tablets, flat-screen TVs, Bang & Olufsen sound systems, etc.
Chewton Glen boasts an award-winning spa with Europe’s biggest hydrotherapy pool, a 10-metre heated outdoor pool and an indoor pool surrounded by Grecian columns. There are two restaurants: The Dining Room and The Kitchen, known for their fish-heavy menu, crab sandwich and bar-snack lunches.
Why We Like It:
- 8 miles from Bournemouth Airport
- 2 miles from New Milton train station
- Availability of aromatherapy sauna, indoor and outdoor pools, steam room, golf course.
- Children’s menu and DVDs
- Babysitting service
Best Family Friendly Hotel: Fowey Hall Hotel
Overlooking the Fowey estuary in Cornwall lies the luxurious Fowey Hall Hotel. Ideal for a family holiday, this family hotel has child-friendly menu options, babysitting services, a free daily crèche and a heated indoor pool.
Replete with fishing boats, this hotel is close to the picturesque town of Polruan, which can be reached via the ferry nearby. Another attraction is the ‘Lilliputian Fowey Aquarium’ which showcases fascinating deep sea creatures.
We particularly liked the marble fireplaces, handmade oak beds and the antique furniture in the family rooms. On top of this, the hotel rooms all look lavish owing to a recent multi-million pound restoration.
There is also a spa complex along with four Elemis treatment rooms and a pool which is four-foot deep throughout. As for the food options, you can try their juicy burgers, steak or fish-based dishes. The hotel also provides children’s books, a kids club with stuffed animals and swimming toys for the pool. The nearest railway station, Main Car Park, is just four minutes away.
Why We Like It:
- Vintage style games room and a play area for kids
- Beach nearby
- Babysitting service
- Pet friendly
- On-site food options
- Indoor library with 700+ books
Best in Travel: Park Plaza Westminster Bridge
Inaugurated in March 2010, the site where Park Plaza is built was voted one of the ugliest buildings in the UK! However, the landscape was completely revamped after the construction of this hotel – 20 floors with 399 guest rooms, four restaurants and bars and a luxurious ambience to die for.
Located close to the London Eye, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, this luxury family hotel is at the ideal location for those looking for a London rendezvous. Other nearby attractions include the National Theatre, National Film Theatre and Hayward Gallery.
Other amenities include a gym (open 24 hours), Aurora spa and suites looking over the House of Parliament and the London Eye. Our favourite thing was the specialized kids menu and the fact that all the rooms at this hotel had Nespresso machines and a tiny kitchenette. As for the dining options, we would recommend that you try roast cod with tomato and capers from the Atrio restaurant.
The indoor swimming pool is open from 7am to 10pm.
Why We Like It:
- Located close to multiple tourist attractions
- Excellent food
- Complimentary breakfast, spa, and sauna
- In-house bar with excellent food & drinks
Adults Only: Brimstone Hotel
Known for its picturesque walking routes, the Brimstone Hotel opened in 2013. Guests can take advantage of their free taxi service from the nearest station (in a shiny black Land Rover). Just as you reach the property, you will see a mansion in blue-grey slate along with wood panelling and glass fronted balconies.
Guests also get complimentary Berghaus products like walking boots, trousers and jackets. The hotel features a 20m pool along with a spa and leisure centre shared with Langdale Hotel. You can get 24-hour complimentary drinks and snacks in the lounge area.
Other amenities include a bar, fitness centre, sauna, hammam, etc. On the flipside, unlike the other hotels we listed above, this one misses out on an in-house dining room. There is the estate’s main restaurant five minutes from the grounds, an even better option is the Wainwrights Inn known for its delectable burgers and gammon steak.
Why We Like It:
- Complimentary drinks and snacks
- Excellent food
- Close to walking routes such as Stickle Ghyll with waterfalls and Lake Windermere
- Large suites with a luxurious touch
- 20m pool with swish spa
Best Budget: Apex City of Bath Hotel
Just opposite the Green Park Station in Somerset lies the Apex City Hotel. It is strategically located at the epicentre of the city and is very close to main shopping areas. The railway station is just 10 minutes away whereas the nearest long-stay car park is five minutes away on foot.
Inside, guests are greeted with an open-plan restaurant, a beautiful lounge area with blue and green leather sofas. There is a 15-metre swimming pool, a sauna, and a steam room for guests. One thing to remember here is that the guests need to book time slots in advance if visiting the pool and gym.
All the rooms have king-sized beds, large windows and arty photos of Bath. Balcony rooms situated on the top floor even have an outdoor area where you can enjoy a pleasant view of the city’s rooftops. Their food is also above average but we would recommend you try nearby restaurants like ‘The Scallop Shell’ and ‘Green Park Brasserie’.
Why We Like It:
- Calm and relaxed ambience, ideal for families
- Close to the train station
- Amenities like bar, fitness centre, parking, restaurant, sauna, etc.
- Value for money option
